The Direct Determination of Fibre Content of Individual Cane Consignments
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION. The method of computing payment for cane in the South African sugar industry, based as it is upon the value of the Java ratio, does not always yield results which are regarded as satisfactory by the cane grower. The j ava ratio is influenced by several factors, notably dirty cane, rainfall and the fibre content, but it is only on the effect of the latter that we are concerned here. Where consignments are crushed at a factory in which high fibre cane usually predominates, the effect of introducing a proportion of low fibre cane, such as may occur during a transfer, will lead to a lower price being raid for the latter than would be the case if crushing were done at a factory where low fibre cane predominates. This anomaly is well known, and has been commented on previously in the proceedings of this Association." The anomaly would disappear provided that the weight of fibre yielded by each consignment of cane could be established within the limits of a commercially acceptable accuracy, since the relationship between fibre content and Java ratio is determinate."

Aspects of Dry Matter Partitioning in Sugarcane
Partitioning of dry matter (DM) in sugarcane is of interest for two fundamental reasons. Firstly sugar production depends directly on partitioning of biomass to the stalk and then to sucrose stored in the stalk. Secondly, various DM components of the stalk and particularly sucrose concentration are used to calculate the value of cane consignments delivered to the mill (Berding, 1997). The value...

In South Africa (SA), individual consignments of shredded cane are analysed by the direct analysis of cane method (DAC). Although this procedure is capable of producing excellent sampling and accurate analysis of consignments, it is labour intensive. NIR has been used by several sugar industries for determining cane quality for cane payment purposes. Earlier work in SA indicated that At-line NI...

Mannitol, formed mainly by Leuconostoc mesenteroides bacteria, is a very sensitive indicator of sugarcane deterioration that directly affects processing and can predict problems from dextran and levan polysaccharides. An enzymatic method has been developed to measure mannitol in juice pressed from consignments of sugarcane delivered to the factory. This screening tool will allow factory staff t...
